Succulents make great houseplants, especially in climates where it may get either too hot or cold to have them growing outside. They are also perfect for pots in patios and look stunning while grouped in landscapes. Depending on the climate, they may take full sun and require little water to keep growing. Here are a few tips that will help get you started.
Water when dry. Only water your succulent if the soil is dry. If the leaves look wrinkled, that may be an indicator that it needs water. In general, succulents require much less water than a typical houseplant.
Sun exposure. Succulents like the sun but may need protection with extreme heat or harsh afternoon sunlight. They are also frost tender which means in most cases they cannot withstand colder weather. In certain environments, you may need to give your succulent some shade or bring it inside to protect from the elements. In other areas, succulents will take full sun with little care at all. Every climate is different and has its own challenges. For inside growing, make sure your succulent has bright, indirect sunlight or place it near a window to soak in the sunlight.
Drainage is key. Because succulents are so susceptible to root rot, they need the soil to drain completely between waterings. If you are using pots, make sure they have drainage holes at the bottom so that water isn’t stagnant. Also, try adding perlite or pumice to your soil mix to help improve with drainage.
